Univention Corporate Client 2.0 with easy configuration and RDP terminal services

Univention, a leading European supplier of Open Source products for the economic operation and efficient management of IT infrastructures, released a new version of its client operating system Univention Corporate Client (UCC). The Ubuntu basis of UCC 2.0 was updated to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. UCC thus profits from all the latest Ubuntu updates including improved hardware support. The most interesting innovation for administrators though is the new configuration wizard, which simplifies the clients’ configuration by guiding through the configuration process in a structured way and executing many bothersome tasks in the background. For this purpose, a new module was developed for the central administration interface Univention Management Console (UMC) which allows the central and easy management of all UCC images.

Bremen, 12th June 2014. Univention Corporate Client is an extension to Univention Corporate Server (UCS), which quickly installs and maintains a large number of client systems on PCs, notebooks and thin clients. UCC provides a complete office desktop or the access to a terminal server via remote desktop.

Administrators benefit from the central UCS management system and the new configuration assistant mainly because of the uncomplicated, standardized administration process and the policy-based configuration of the clients in the UMC. The new assistant makes a subsequent configuration of the clients almost unnecessary as all configurations are now created in one step. The Citrix Receiver, for example, which is not included due to licensing restrictions, can now be integrated with a few clicks and without interrupting the set up process.

Thanks to the new xrdp support, UCC now uses the RDP protocol for the central server-side provision of remote desktops. This results in a more efficient use of the available bandwidth and administrators can now also easily access remote desktops from Windows or Mac OS X systems. Here, UCC uses NeutrinoRDP as its default client.

In addition to numerous bug fixes and other smaller improvements of the system, the developers optimised the UCC image build process resulting in the creation of smaller images. Furthermore, administrators now have the possibility to accelerate the booting of the client computers centrally from the management console UMC by switching off the PXE boot. The setup of encrypted hard disks has also been facilitated as they can now be configured directly in the UMC. Print servers, via CIFS integrated home directories and proxy settings can now also be configured centrally via policies.

With the version UCC 2.0, a complete row of underlying software has been updated. The Linux kernel 3.13 improves hardware support, the desktop environment KDE is supplied in the version 4.13 and the X server is updated to 1.15. In addition, UCC supplies the office package LibreOffice 4.2.3 and the latest corresponding Firefox browser. All UCS packages are updated to version UCS 3.2-2 and UCC now supports the PXE installation on UEFI PCs.

About Univention Corporate Client (UCC)
Univention Corporate Client (UCC) is a flexible and economic solution for the operation and management of PCs, notebooks and thin clients in companies and institutions. The software contains an Ubuntu-based desktop environment optimized for business use. In addition, UCC serves as a platform for access to remote desktop solutions and virtualized desktops as well as to browser or terminal server-based applications.

Using UCC, desktops can be easily adjusted to the respective hardware and purpose of use. The solution can be managed conveniently and efficiently via the web-based Univention Management Console (UMC). In this way, UCC can also be used to establish administrative procedures integrated in existing solutions for users, clients, desktops and rights. UCC reduces administrative efforts further via a fully automatic installation process, a central update management as well as an integral user and rights management. The German federal state Brandenburg already uses UCC for the management of thin client workstations for more than 1,000 municipal employees who can thus access a central terminal server via remote.

About Univention
Univention is a leading European provider of Open Source products for the cost-efficient operation and effective administration of IT infrastructures. The core product is the Linux infrastructure solution Univention Corporate Server (UCS). UCS is a modern enterprise Linux distribution with integrated Open Source solutions for identity and infrastructure management, which makes efficient, centrally controlled administration possible even in challenging environments. The core product is complemented by a range of solutions based on UCS for the cross-platform management of thin clients, support for Linux desktops and an integrated virtualization solution. Thanks to the supplied connectors, for example for Microsoft Active Directory, these components integrate seamlessly in existing infrastructures and allow simple migration. A large number of software producers offer optimised packages for operation with UCS, which can be integrated seamlessly in the UCS management system. UCS is thus the optimal Open Source integration platform for IT infrastructure operation and management.
