Univention publishes new client system with central management
At CeBIT, Univention, a manufacturer of integrated infrastructure software products, will be exhibiting its new desktop product, Univention Corporate Client (UCC). Based on the Linux operating system Ubuntu, UCC is a centrally managed client system for use with desktops, notebooks and thin clients. It allows administrators to manage Linux-based client systems with different end devices — from laptops to self-service terminals — centrally, efficiently and consistently.
Bremen, 20th February 2013. As a trade fair innovation, the manufacturer will be exhibiting its new product “Univention Corporate Client” (UCC) for the operation and management of clients. With this new software, Univention is reacting to what it sees as the increasing demand for completely managed client systems such as thin clients or kiosk systems which are clearly defined in terms of the scope of functions they offer. After all, the need in companies and authorities for the integral and central management of desktop systems irrespective of the type of end device is very high.
For this reason, UCC is a desktop management solution and client operating system in one. Visitors can see at the Univention booth how client systems can be holistically rolled out, operated and centrally managed on thin client, laptops and PCs. They are also given an impression of the Ubuntu-based Linux desktop integrated in UCC with the tried-and-tested and user-friendly user interface KDE and the Office suite LibreOffice.
Most important features: Individual desktop environment and management solution in one
UCC is aimed at companies and other organisations seeking a modern, cost-effective alternative to conventional desktop systems for the provision and central administration of computer workstations. As a convenient-to-use operating and management solution, UCC allows access to different terminal server solutions and desktop virtualization environments and provides individually configured desktop environments.
Integrated management of users, clients and desktops
In Univention Corporate Client, Univention is offering a flexible, individually customisable, Ubuntu-based client operating system for thin clients and self-service terminals (kiosk systems), but also for use with managed desktops. According to the manufacturer’s specifications, this makes it the ideal platform for access to hosted, virtual desktops or web-based applications, for example. The software distribution and maintenance is standardised and simplified by the allocation of policies. In addition to optimal support for Microsoft Windows, as the client operating system most often employed with UCS, UCC also expands the existing features in UCS for the connection of Linux clients to offer the possibility of complete management of Linux-based clients. That translates to more choice and flexibility for users.
