CeBIT 2014: Univention AD-Takeover simplifies migration from Active Directory domains
Bremen, 5th February 2014. Univention GmbH, a leading European provider of Open Source products for the cost-efficient operation and effective administration of IT infrastructures will be exhibiting a new wizard for Active Directory domain migration at the CeBIT in Hanover (10th-14th March, Hall 6, Booth H15): AD-Takeover. The wizard makes the migration from Microsoft AD domains to Univention Corporate Server (UCS) child’s play. The new tool is also of considerable benefit to system houses with customers who use the discontinued Microsoft Small Business Server and are now looking for a simple means of migrating away from the discontinued product. However, the enterprise operating system UCS is not only suitable as an alternative to Microsoft servers. Thanks to an additional function, which Univention is also presenting at CeBIT, the mounting of a UCS system in an existing Windows environment is performed just as Windows administrators are used to.This makes UCS an ideal platform for integrating additional business applications in existing Active Directory environments via the Univention App Center.
Whilst manual migration of Active Directory domains is often prone to errors, requires a wealth of knowledge and can take several days, UCS users simply need to start this procedure in the Internet browser with this new wizard. In a few, simple steps, AD-Takeover completes all the necessary work such as the copying of the authorisation data. Once this procedure is complete, the Microsoft Active directory servers can be switched off and UCS takes over their duties. As a general rule, the client users don’t even notice that anything has changed.
However, UCS is not only a fully-fledged alternative to Microsoft servers – the numerous business applications available in the Univention App Center can be used to expand existing infrastructures practically with new applications. For this reason, a new UCS operating mode now makes it possible to join existing Microsoft domains as a member with UCS. In this case, the Active Directory structure remains unchanged.
These two functions offer users and service providers added freedom: they no longer need to choose between UCS and Windows servers, but instead can simply run both in parallel. Via the Univention App Center it is also possible to use numerous additional business applications with absolutely no problems, as they can be seamlessly integrated in the Windows landscape. If you then decide to change over to UCS completely at a later point in time, the migration wizard makes the transition easier than ever.
About Univention
Univention is a leading European provider of Open Source products for the cost-efficient operation and effective administration of IT infrastructures. The core product is the Linux infrastructure solution Univention Corporate Server (UCS). UCS is a modern enterprise Linux distribution with integrated Open Source solutions for identity and infrastructure management, which makes efficient, centrally controlled administration possible even in challenging environments. The core product is complemented by a range of solutions based on UCS for the cross-platform management of thin clients, support for Linux desktops and an integrated virtualization solution. Thanks to the supplied connectors, for example for Microsoft Active Directory, these components integrate seamlessly in existing infrastructures and allow simple migration. A large number of software producers offer optimised packages for operation with UCS, which can be integrated seamlessly in the UCS management system. UCS is thus the optimal Open Source integration platform for IT infrastructure operation and management.
