OPSI – Automated Device Management

OPSI (Open System Integration) is the centralized management solution for Windows, Linux, and macOS devices. The core component is a Linux server that handles the following tasks:
 

• Automated OS deployment (Windows and Linux)
• Software distribution, including updates and patches 
• Hardware and software inventory management

OPSI enables the centralized administration of clients across multiple locations through a single management interface. All configurations are stored centrally, while software repositories for client packages can be distributed across different locations.

OPSI Extensions
 
OPSI is open-source software, with all core components published under the AGPLv3 license. The version available via the Univention App Center is free of license fees.

The manufacturer, uib GmbH, offers optional extensions that enhance functionality as a subscription.
Available extensions include, but are not limited to:

• Directory Connector: Synchronizes data between OPSI clients and LDAP-enabled directory services such as Active Directory or Samba 4.
• License Management: Provides centralized license management within the OPSI configuration editor.
• UEFI/Secureboot: Supports UEFI/GPT partitioning and Secure Boot.
• scalability: Enhances performance in large-scale environments by enabling multiple worker processes and parallel service execution across multiple servers.
• WIM-capture: Captures complete Windows installations—including configuration, installed software, and updates—into Windows Imaging Format (WIM) files for deployment on other clients.

In addition, uib GmbH provides affordable update subscriptions that include ready-made installation packages for Microsoft hotfixes, or special software. The manufacturer also offers additional services such as OPSI support contracts, workshops, and trainings.

Client Synchronization
 
For UCS and UCS@school users the Director Connector extension is particularly valuable. It synchronizes client data between the OPSI environment and the UCS directory service, eliminating the need to manage duplicate data. The connector supports both Active Directory and Samba 4 domains and enables domain-based authentication for OPSI users.
