IT System Engineer Oliver talks about his work at Univention

What are your tasks as a system engineer?

As a system engineer, I’m responsible for the technical part of the project business: I support the consultants with questions regarding technical feasibility, implement customer-specific enhancements and communicate information on dependencies and costs to the project. Depending on the technical depth required, I also carry out remote meetings with customers, e. g. to carry out a UCS@School introduction.

To do this, I have to be very familiar with UCS and its customization options without disregarding the customer’s wishes. My tools are screen sessions via SSH, git, Python, and Bash scripts.

What is a typical working day?

A typical working day usually starts with a short consultation with my team colleagues. Then we get down to the technical details: a customer would like to have an additional field automatically configured during the user import, or needs help with the connection services. After clarifying the request / the error pattern, I log on to one of the (test) systems via SSH and get the necessary information. Then I fix the problem or adapt a script. Depending on the stage of the project, I also develop new customized adaptations.

After the acceptance by customers or colleagues, I create a
package and document the changes. In addition, I support my team colleagues with technical questions and sometimes develop concepts and estimates together with customers.

What do you like about your work?

You do learn something new all the time and see the practical use of a powerful combination of several OpenSource components (=UCS). Between systems and scripts, I also always see the people behind them, and I am happy to support them in their challenges.

Why do you like about Univention?

Univention gives me a lot of freedom to develop. Also, Univention pursues social goals in addition to monetary ones. I am happy to contribute to the further spread of OpenSource software and digital sovereignty. Despite working remotely, I feel well integrated and like the team spirit and the professional exchange among colleagues.

What did you learn so far since you have been working for Univention?

Quite a lot. Since my master’s degree in computer science and a job change, It’s been exciting to see the impact my work has. Also. there are many details in UCS, so you never stop learning new things.
