The schools of the city of Chemnitz were dependent on a solution for school IT that would ensure the coexistence of Microsoft Windows and Linux, as both operating systems were already being used on end devices. Univention Corporate Server with UCS@school enables parallel operation and the connection of both worlds.

The SyS-C team of the City of Chemnitz looks after the IT of the 80 schools in Chemnitz with around 30,000 users and around 5,000 end devices.

- Active Directory compatible domain services for group policies and domain integration of new Microsoft Windows operating systems.
- Preferred use of an open source solution.
- Coexistence of Windows and Linux operating systems in schools with the use of a standardized user directory.
- Central software distribution with depot server function at the school locations.
- Easy expandability of the solution to include central IT services, such as file exchange services for mobile devices and tablets.

- Univention Corporate Server (UCS) with integrated Samba 4 and UCS@school as well as the software distribution tool OPSI from uib GmbH.
- Fully automated user administration via the UCS Identity & Management System.
- Graphical user interfaces for computer room control.
