  • Univention
  • UCS as an abbreviation for Univention Corporate Server
  • UCS@school
  • Nubus

Usage Rights

The software packages provided by Univention as part of its products often include content based on trademarks protected by Univention, including icons, logos, and brand names. The goal of the usage rights described here is to permit the use of these trademarks as long as they are used within the context of the Univention-created products and software packages.

The following conditions apply to the use of Univention trademark rights:

  • Univention products, including the Univention trademarks contained therein, may be freely downloaded, installed, and updated.
  • Univention products, including the Univention trademarks contained therein, may be freely redistributed if they remain unchanged, the redistribution is not part of a commercial offering, and it is clearly identifiable as a product from Univention. Exceptions are possible through explicit agreement with Univention.
  • Univention trademarks may be used as part of the private or internal use of Univention products.
  • In articles, test reports, and other communications related to Univention products, the unmodified brand names may be used freely, provided it is not implied that these documents or communications originate from Univention.
  • When developing software for use with or integration into Univention products, the unmodified Univention trademarks may be referenced in program code and accompanying documentation and communication.
  • Univention products may be modified for internal use without requiring the removal of Univention trademarks.
  • Modified Univention products that contain Univention trademarks may not be redistributed to third parties without explicit agreement from Univention. Alternatively, all Univention trademarks and other protected content must be removed beforehand.
  • The use of Univention trademarks as part of your own products, product names, or other commercial offerings, including and especially offerings based on Univention products, is only permitted with explicit agreement from Univention.
  • Any use of Univention trademarks not explicitly permitted in these license terms requires prior explicit agreement from Univention.

Use of Univention Software and Software Packages

Software Overview

Univention currently provides the following software products:

  • Univention Nubus, short Nubus
  • Univention Corporate Server, short UCS
  • UCS@school

In addition to source code, Univention software is currently available in the following technical formats for use:

  • As installation media (ISO image)
  • As images for virtual machines (e.g., OVA and QCOW2 images)
  • As container images
  • As Debian packages

The information in this document serves as examples. Extensions or changes to the products and formats of provision are possible without changes to this document. The license terms apply regardless of product name or format.

Composition of Univention Products

Univention products contain software for which Univention is not the licensor, also known as “upstream software.” This upstream software has been released by its creators under open source licenses. The usage terms described here or other license terms from Univention do not alter the license terms of the upstream software and therefore do not affect the rights to use this software.

For software developed by Univention, the copyright is fully held by Univention. At the time of creating this document, distribution is entirely as open source through the platform github.com under the AGPLv3.

Univention products contain software whose copyrights and therefore licensing decisions rest with Univention. The packages and images provided as Univention products are therefore not automatically subject to the same licensing as the source code provided independently of the images. Their use is only permitted under the conditions described in this document.

Usage License and Warranty

Free Use

Univention products and software packages are available for free download from public servers. The use of these Univention products and software packages is referred to as “Free Use” since no purchase or subscription agreement is made between the user and Univention. The provision occurs as part of a donation agreement.

This “Free Use” is subject to the terms described in this document and is accepted upon download:

  • Univention products may be freely downloaded, installed, and updated.
  • Univention products may be freely redistributed if they remain unchanged and the redistribution is not part of a commercial offering.
  • Private use and internal use of Univention products, including in commercially operating organizations, is free of charge.
  • The use of source code is subject to the usage licenses specified in the source files. For software authored by Univention, this is always an OSI-compliant open source license, usually AGPLv3.
  • The use of trademarks in Univention products is subject to the “Use of Univention Trademarks” section in this document.
  • The use of Univention products that contain software authored by Univention as part of commercial offerings requires a contractual agreement with Univention.
  • Under the terms of free use, there are no warranty claims. Productive use is at your own risk and requires prior careful testing. Liability, warranty, support, and maintenance claims that arise from our commercial software contracts do not apply to free use.
  • Univention products contain features that allow functionality to be extended, such as the App Center of Univention Corporate Server. These functions or software packages may be provided by third parties or Univention and may be subject to different terms of use.

Commercial Use

For the commercial use of Univention products and software packages, it is recommended to conclude a subscription agreement or an individual agreement with Univention. In addition to warranty and support provided by Univention, such agreements may extend the usage rights of the software packages and the included Univention trademarks.

For use as part of a commercial offering to third parties, the conclusion of a subscription agreement or another contractual permission from Univention is necessary.

Licensing conditions of the UCS Enterprise Subscriptions

Univention products such as Univention Corporate Server are a composition of installation software, software packages in binary format, documentation and other copyrighted intellectual property of Univention GmbH (logos, graphics etc.). For commercial use, they must only be circulated via license and maintenance contracts in accordance with the licensing conditions for Univention Corporate Server. The use of software support and maintenance also requires the purchase of a commercial license. The licensing conditions can be found in our General Terms and Conditions.

The free UCS Core Edition runs under a separate license that must be accepted prior to usage.

Naturally, we respect the licensing conditions of the Open Source software packages of other manufacturers that are included in our products and deliver the source code for these packages in accordance with the respective license.

Software categories in Univention products

Software developed by Univention

The source code for the software developed by Univention such as, for example, the UCS management system, is Open Source and is generally provided via the GNU AGPLv3. It can be downloaded from our download server and used free of charge, modified and circulated within the scope of the AGPL licensing. Please note that the installation packages might contain further material like logos from Univention and cannot be further distributed.

Standard Open Source Software

Standard Open Source software, which is included in the Univention products, but was not predominantly or completely developed by Univention such as, for example, the Linux kernel as well as the directory service OpenLDAP and the Samba software, is circulated in accordance with the licensing conditions of the respective Open Source project. The Linux kernel, for example, is subject to the GNU GPL.

Proprietary Software by Other Manufaturers

Proprietary software by other manufacturers such as, for example, the Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is integrated in UCS, is circulated in accordance with the licensing conditions of the respective manufacturer and is clearly identified as proprietary software.
