New release of enterprise server UCS launched

Univention Corporate Server 3.2 with improved user guidance and compatibility

Bremen, 19th November 2013. Univention GmbH, one of Europe’s leading suppliers of Open Source products for the cost-efficient operation and efficient administration of IT infrastructures (www.univention.com), has now launched Release 3.2 of its enterprise Linux distribution Univention Corporate Server (UCS). In the new version of its Windows server alternative, Univention has optimised the user guidance above all. In addition, compatibility with current hardware and the Microsoft systems Server 2012 and Windows 8.1 has also been improved. As such, UCS 3.2 is both a cost-efficient and a user-friendly enterprise server platform.

The new layout of the elements on the central management interface and additional information on the individual functions facilitate orientation for UCS users in Version 3.2. The integration of UCS’ own system components in the App Center also simplifies the administration of the installed software. A new overview page allows easy access to the available applications for end users and administrators. All the applications which are available in the App Center of UCS 3.1 are also directly available for UCS 3.2. Furthermore, with the new version of UCS, administrators benefit from a new single sign-on function, which allows them to switch to another system rapidly without the need to sign in again.

UCS 3.2 is a sophisticated and cost-efficient alternative to Microsoft Server. Together with the convenient migration tool and numerous expansion possibilities, Active Directory-compatible domain services guarantee a seamless transition. The simple layout and administration via the easy-to-use management system make UCS particularly attractive for companies without a big IT department. The changeover is worth it for companies of any size thanks to the attractive cost structure – they pay primarily for maintenance and care as well as support, not for licenses. In the first year, a server with 50 users and installation support costs € 985, with standard support just € 1,885. UCS 3.2 employs the Linux kernel 3.10.15 and the Debian base updated to 6.0.8. OpenLDAP was updated to 2.4.35 and, thanks to the support of the SMB protocol versions SMB2 and SMB3, Samba 4.1 guarantees seamless data exchange, even with Windows 8 clients and Microsoft Server 2012. In addition, schema replication in UCS 3.2 has been improved via the use of multiple domain controllers, making it more robust. The SAML identity provider application already available as an add-on module for UCS Version 3.1 for the administration of login data for different cloud services is now an integral component of the system.
