Univention ensures simple administration of Windows, Linux, cloud and apps
At CeBIT in Hall 6, Booth E 16, Univention, the leading German manufacturer of integrated Open Source software for IT operation and management, will be exhibiting its continually extended solution Univention Corporate Server as an easy-to-use server and integration platform for companies and institutions. With this Open Source software, users can simplify user and rights management, provide server services such as Active Directory, support Windows, Linux and Mac OS X-based clients and integrate a wide range of cloud-based applications simply. In addition, Univention’s technology partners will also be demonstrating a wide range of corporate solutions integrated in Univention Corporate Server’s App Center.
Bremen, 15th February 2013. At CeBIT Open Source, the Bremen-based infrastructure software manufacturer will be presenting Univention Corporate Server (UCS) as an economic and easy-to-use platform for the operation and administration of IT infrastructures and applications in the organisations of tomorrow. On the one hand, these need to support their existing applications and Windows clients optimally and on the other hand they need to master a spectrum of new requirements such as the integration of cloud-based applications and mobile devices. This results in a considerable increase in complexity and often also to new dependencies, which users may later find it difficult to escape from.
In Univention Corporate Server the Bremen-based provider offers an open integration platform with which companies can reduce and master this complexity. After all, on the one hand, Univention Corporate Server includes the necessary server services for the operation and administration of systems with Microsoft Windows, which are integrated in the easy-to-operate UCS management system and, on the other hand, this management system also makes it possible to integrate cloud-based applications simply and easily. In addition, the recently launched “Univention App Center” also offers the possibility of integrating a wide range of applications required by companies and authorities, for instance for communication and cooperation or customer and document management, in individual infrastructures with just a few clicks of the mouse. Moreover, UCS also supports the operation of thin clients and Linux-based and Mac OS X-based clients and includes a wide range of functions for virtualization and virtualization management. As such it is a flexible and open platform for classic and future IT tasks with a central, easy-to-use management system.
Visitors to CeBIT can experience these functions for themselves on the demo systems. Here they can see how with just a few steps in the web-based UCS management tool it is possible to transfer extensive Active Directory functions to the cloud or another provider, administrate hybrid cloud scenarios and realise a central, cross-location user and access rights management system.
Using the new UCS component “Univention App Center”, users can install third-party products such as groupware, document management or backup solutions using UCS as the management platform, regardless of whether the application is hosted by the local IT or on the cloud.
The manufacturers of the most important solutions available in the App Center will also be demonstrating them live on the Univention booth. The solutions on show include the Microsoft Exchange groupware alternative Zarafa, the file-sharing software ownCloud, the OTRS-based IT service management solution KIXbox and the customer management system SugarCRM, the high availability solution DRBD and the VoIP system Asterisk.
UCS as a Windows Server alternative: Economic operation of IT infrastructure
At the Univention demo points, visitors can get to know the comprehensive Active Directory functions of UCS, which allow Microsoft Windows Server-compatible domain management. In this way, it is also even possible to operate Windows clients and desktops without a Microsoft Windows Server.
In addition, Univention will also be exhibiting a new, in-house developed tool for the automated adoption of data for the migration of Microsoft Active Directory to Samba 4, which is included in UCS. This allows administrators to replace an existing Active Directory with UCS without the need to remount Microsoft Windows clients in the domain.
Integrated virtualization management without additional costs
Furthermore, the Bremen-based company will also be showing the UCS-integrated management solution for the central management of virtualized computers. This can be used, for example, to migrate virtualized systems easily between physical servers and managed them via the same management system that is used for the domain and service management.
New version of the IT complete solution for schools UCS@school
Finally, the Univention booth will also offer CeBIT visitors a chance to see the new version of the complete solution for the operation and management of IT in schools and in teaching sessions “Univention Corporate Server@school” ,(UCS@school), launched in early February. This new version impresses with very comprehensive hardware support and is also available in the “Univention App Center” for the first time. In this way, school administrations benefit from a rapid and guided installation in which the complete school IT solution is fully ready for use in just a few mouse clicks.
