The further development of the role and permission model in UCS@school is a central development focus at Univention in 2025. On September 2, the new role “Legal Guardian” was introduced. It enables better communication with legal guardians, strengthens their involvement in everyday school life, and simultaneously increases security.

Creating and Managing Legal Guardian Accounts
User accounts for legal guardians are created in the UCS@school portal either manually by school administration under “Users (Schools)” or maintained by the IT administration of the school authority (or ministry/senate administration) via CSV import or through the Kelvin API. One or more students can be linked to a legal guardian account. Further details can be found in our changelog as well as in the scenario description in our manual.
Access and Permissions for Legal Guardians
With the new role, legal guardians gain access to selected functions in the UCS@school portal. In addition, school administration can define specific rules – for example, granting WLAN access for legal guardians during parent-teacher meetings.
This step marks a significant advancement in the role and permission model in UCS@school.
Outlook: Integration with ID Broker Applications
Starting in Q4 of this year (expected), support for the legal guardian role will also be extended to applications connected via the Univention ID Broker. Applications linked to the ID Broker will then be able to seamlessly integrate legal guardians into the respective functions they provide. Access will, of course, take place via Single Sign-on and the portal provided by UCS@school.
Do you already have ideas on how you would like to make use of the new legal guardian role?
