Today we introduce our new Domain Join Assistant for Univention Corporate Server (UCS). With this tool, administrators can now integrate Ubuntu computers into a UCS domain without any additional manual configuration. Thanks to this, all users can log in directly to their Ubuntu desktop using their usual domain accounts. This automation eases administrators’ work to manage Ubuntu clients on the network. Thanks to Kerberos SAML integration, organizations that already use UCS version 4.3 can now offer their users single sign-on for the Ubuntu clients.

Univention Domain Join Assistant will replace UCC

Please note that the new Domain Join Assistant will also replace the previous Univention Corporate Client (UCC), which we will discontinue. However, customers with a maintenance contract for Univention Corporate Client will receive UCC updates until April 30, 2021.

We want to give all UCS users the possibility to easily integrate notebooks and PCs with standard Ubuntu into their UCS domains, thus keeping the maintenance effort as low as possible. The new Domain Join Assistant will be of great help for this.

Other benefits of the Domain Join Assistant in UCS environments

• Users can log in to various Ubuntu systems using their login information.
• Manual login is no longer required, because users can enter their credentials in the clear user interface and all subsequent steps are done automatically.
• Users can work without the installation of a special client.

Univention supports Ubuntu 17.10 (“Artful”), 16.04 LTS (“Xenial”) as well as the brand new Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (“Bionic Beaver”) that is expected at the end of April.

If you are a maintenance customer of Univention Corporate Client (UCC), please find more information on the discontinuation in our Univention Wiki .

  1. This is a great effort from UCS. But what about the admin account not being the root of the client machine? (Just like in Windows system).

      Hello Sharif,

Our current main focus is to enable the domain registration for Ubuntu clients in UCS. This should work ideally with only a few adaptions of the Ubuntu base, so that after the installation of new Ubuntu updates, everything else will also work perfectly.

If you want to use the admin account in Ubuntu, you could add the user ‘Administrator’ to the group ‘sudo’ on your Ubuntu client.

      Hi Antonio,

The actual focus of our development is to enable the domain registration of Ubuntu clients in UCS with only very few adaptions of the Ubuntu base. At the moment, we do not plan any other extended features, because our core business is Univention Corporate Server. So if you have any special requests, please use the existing Ubuntu tools.

  3. Just tested it! It’s really great! I new to Univention (which I love dearly now). I was a bit disappointed with the removal of UCC. However, I think you have done a fantastic job. I like the fact that when I set a user in UCS to change the password on next login, this process in fact can be done in the Ubuntu client login screen! Is the source code of this product available and be able to contribute?

But if i add ubuntu18.04 clients with ucs domain join assistant tool, i am getting success message but ubuntu not allowing me to enter as a network user and also i cant find ubuntu 18.04 clients on ucs web management portal. its not added in ucs.
How to resolve this. Also i need to test with roaming profiles for ubuntu clients. how to configure that on users home path. In the documentation you have prepared for joining clients in ucs and not for roaming profiles. Can you please help me on this.
