Bremen, 1st July 2015 – Univention (www.univention.de) is amazed by the positive feedback that it has received on the free Core Edition of Univention Corporate Server (UCS), which has now been available for two months. The popularity of this Open Source server solution optimised for the operation and management of IT infrastructures and server applications as well as identity management in companies is growing at lightning speed. The integrated App Center with a constantly increasing number of enterprise applications has also contributed substantially to this success.

Peter Ganten, CEO of Univention: “Since we released the Core Edition at the end of April, up to three times as many users as before have been installing UCS every day – in many cases simply to be able to download the apps from the Univention App Center and test them or start using them immediately. At the end of January there were still only approximately 5,000 application instances from the App Center active and in use by UCS users; this figure had already risen to 12,000 by the end of May.”

The providers of the approximately 70 apps in the Univention App Center have also noticed the trend. For example, Rafael Laguna, CEO of the groupware manufacturer Open-Xchange, said: “We are certain that the simplified and free use of the UCS Core Edition is improving the popularity of the high-performance Univention platform. Of course, that makes it even more attractive to software developers like us, who want to offer their solutions in the Univention App Center. And as a result, cloud service providers will soon be able to use it to access an even more comprehensive selection of integrated applications.”

UCS Core Edition available free of charge and with no functional restrictions

The UCS Core Edition can be used without any functional restrictions and includes all the security-relevant updates for Univention Corporate Server. With its comprehensive Active Directory functions, UCS is a flexible and cost-effective Open Source alternative to server solutions from Microsoft. The server software offers its own App Center, which can be used to install around 70 enterprise apps simply, which can then be integrated in existing IT infrastructures and managed centrally. In addition, it is also ideal for the simple integration of cloud services. As such, UCS is particularly suited to the requirements of young, dynamically developing companies, which take it as given that their infrastructures can be completely or partly run on the cloud, but still want to manage and control their data and the rights management centrally.
In addition to the new UCS Core Edition, Univention also simplified its subscription models in April, making the first steps even simpler for smaller companies. Compared with the Core Edition, the main differences in the commercial UCS Enterprise editions are longer software maintenance periods and access to different service level agreements.
