Univention's Open Source philosophy

Open Source licensing of Univention products

Univention products are composed of three software categories:

  1. Standard Open Source software, which was predominantly or completely not developed by Univention. This includes, for example, the Linux kernel or the OpenLDAP directory service, which forms an important basic component of the UCS management system.

  2. Software developed by Univention such as installation and management software (e.g., the UCS management system).

  3. Software from third parties which is not Open Source software (e.g., Adobe Acrobat Reader).

Univention circulates software in accordance with the following conditions:

  1. Standard Open Source software is circulated in accordance with the licensing conditions of the respective Open Source project - for example, the Linux kernel is subject to the GNU General Public License (GPL).

  2. The source code for the software developed by Univention is generally provided for general use via the GNU AGPL with every release.

  3. Proprietary programs developed by third-party manufacturers (software from third parties) are circulated in accordance with the licensing conditions of the respective manufacturer and are clearly identified as being proprietary software.

The source code of current UCS versions can be downloaded from our download server. It is subject to the AGPLv3 and can be used free of charge, modified and circulated within the scope of the AGPL licensing.

The Univention products as a whole, comprising the installation software, software packages in binary format and documentation may only be circulated in the commercial environment in accordance with the licensing conditions for Univention Corporate Server.

Open Source community

All partners and member of the Open Source community are welcome to participate actively in the further development of UCS. To ensure that modifications and expansions can be integrated in UCS and other Univention products, this requires a written declaration assigning Univention the right to publish Univention software including the modifications made by third parties under the AGPL and other licensing conditions. This does not limit the original author's right to use freely and license such modifications and expansions. A corresponding declaration can be downloaded.

Please send expansions and extensions to feedback(at)univention.de.
We look forward to your contributions!

Univention itself is also an active member of the Open Source community. The Univention developers are actively involved in a wide range of different Open Source projects.

Licensing conditions
